Aproximately 0725 I took off in the morning, picking up Dave and Scott, met the others outside Stoke and off to the Rainbow station.
From the Rainbow station we headed off to the Hamilton river ford.
Parked the car here and pilled into 3 4ws plus 3 members mountain biked off up to the track start.
A grinding 4w trip up the rainbow with Ben stuck once.
12:17 pm At the end of the road. Fucking hell drove up the rainbow and the car has taken a battering.
The drive is go up the Wairau River road, cant use the Hamilton River Bridge, 4 wheel drive bypass.
A bit of a bang clunk.
Turned off up the rainbow about 4km's past old Rainbow Homestead.
Drove to the end of the 4wheel drive track.
Walked up Paske creek to Paske hut.
The walk to this hut is very nice.4:04 pm at the hut and having soup etc.
Beutifull area, open tussock valley.
Grabbed a bit of fire wood fooded and slept.
7:44 pm in bed. Cold.
Sunday 2th August 1997
5:00 am out of bed.
6:00 am left hut for Paske.
Crossed the river about 10 minutes from the hut, slow going thru the bush (needed to avoid gorge) then out onto the snow.
Snow down to about 1200meters. Headed NE to obvious saddle.
Then NW up the obvios ridge to the top of Paske. About half way up the ridge was a small rock band to be negotiated. With the snow depth this was an easy obstacle to pass.
No real difficulties at all. Just basic snow skills with an axe and crampons.
Often once we where out of the bush we could see the other party heading up Mt Dora.
There where 7 members in the D team.
Attempt was unsuccessfull, was a problem with gendarmes between peak 2130 and Dora itself.
10:45 am on top of Paske, Awsome views for miles around.
2:00 pm Left Paske hut for car.
4:45 pm drove off. Lots of mucking around re changes re people etc
6:40 pm Left the ski feild road for home
8:15 pm home.
